A gas fee is the number of units your transaction consumes multiplied by the price of a unit in gwei, and since EIP-1559 that Ethereum price splits into a burned base fee plus a tip. On FeeEdge's 17 August 2026 review an Ethereum L1 token move cost $2–10 and cleared $50 during mints, while Ethereum.org's 1–6 October 2026 directory displayed Base at $0.001–0.002 and Arbitrum One at $0.004–0.005. The $12 you paid was congestion, a contract call, or a re-submitted transaction, not a random markup. If the total fee passes 1% of the amount you are moving, change route rather than tip.

![Crypto gas fees explained with a fee breakdown on a dark background](https://img1.ladyww.cn/picture/Picture00205.jpg)

Gas is the fee you pay for space in a block. That is the whole concept, and it explains almost everything that follows. Crypto gas fees do not scale with the size of your trade — a $50 swap and a $50,000 swap can cost the same — they scale with how much work your transaction asks the network to do and how many other people want the next block at that moment.

So the same swap can cost $12 at one minute and two cents at another. Crypto gas fees swing that far because block space is auctioned, not priced. This guide covers what you are actually buying, why your $12 happened, what seven major networks charge, and the six changes that take a routine transfer down to a couple of cents.

## What crypto gas fees actually pay for

What are gas fees, plainly? A metered charge for computation and storage on a shared computer, collected by whoever produces the block. Everything else in this section is detail on that sentence.

### Gas units times price per unit

Gas is counted in units. Each unit is a fixed allowance of work: one addition, one storage read, one storage write. Your transaction declares a limit, and the network charges you for the units it actually consumes.

The price of a unit is quoted in gwei, one billionth of an ETH. Multiply the two numbers and you have the fee. That is why the same wallet can show a transfer costing cents on a quiet Tuesday and several dollars during a mint without any setting changing. The unit count barely moves. The price per unit does. If the base mechanics are new to you, start with [what a blockchain is](/what-is-blockchain/) and come back.

### The EIP-1559 split: base fee plus tip

Since EIP-1559 in 2021, the Ethereum gas fee shown in your wallet is two numbers added together. The base fee is set by the protocol for each block and is burned — it goes to no validator, no treasury and no company. The priority tip is what you add on top to compete for inclusion.

The base fee moves toward a target block size. It rises while blocks run fuller than target and falls while they run emptier. You cannot argue it down by editing a field, only wait for it. The tip is the only part you control, and on a chain with spare capacity an honest tip is close to zero. Paying a large tip on an empty chain buys you nothing at all.

### Why a simple transfer is 21,000 units and an ERC-20 move is not

A native ETH transfer is charged at exactly 21,000 gas units. The protocol hard-codes that number because the operation is fixed: check the sender’s balance, subtract, add to the recipient, bump the nonce. Nothing is looked up and nothing is decided.

An ERC-20 transfer does more. It calls a contract, which reads the token ledger, checks an allowance when one is involved, writes a new balance for the sender, writes another for the recipient, and emits an event so wallets and indexers can see it. Every storage write carries a price. The result costs several times the 21,000 baseline before you have done anything clever.

A swap is more expensive again. A router contract pulls your token, calls a pool, sometimes hops through two or three pools, and rewrites balances in each. Approve-plus-swap means two transactions, so two fees. The number in your wallet is not a markup. It is a count of storage operations, and you can read the breakdown in [Ethereum.org’s gas documentation](https://ethereum.org/en/gas/).

### The L2 blob component after EIP-4844

A layer 2 transaction is priced in two parts. The first is execution on the L2 itself, which is cheap because that chain has far less competition for block space. The second is the cost of shipping the transaction’s data to Ethereum, where it is stored so anyone can rebuild the L2 state.

EIP-4844, shipped in 2024, added blobs: a data channel built for rollups that is much cheaper than posting raw calldata. That single change is most of the reason Base displayed $0.001–0.002 per transaction in [Ethereum.org’s L2 directory](https://ethereum.org/en/layer-2/) snapshot for 1–6 October 2026, while an ERC-20 move on Ethereum L1 sat at $2–10 per FeeEdge’s review of 17 August 2026.

## Why your $12 happened

Three causes cover nearly every expensive transaction you will ever sign.

**Mainnet congestion.** Ethereum L1 produces a block every 12 seconds and each block holds a fixed amount of room. When a mint, claim or listing opens, thousands of people bid for the same handful of blocks and the base fee climbs until demand breaks. FeeEdge records the ERC-20 range at $2–10 and above $50 during mints, so $12 is not an outlier. It is a normal busy afternoon. When the mint closes the base fee decays block by block and the identical swap settles near the bottom of the range, often within ten minutes.

**A contract interaction rather than a transfer.** Sending USDT from your wallet is not a transfer in the 21,000-unit sense. It is a call into a contract that may write to three storage slots. Add an approval and you have signed two transactions, paid twice, and waited twice. A swap that routes through two pools costs more than one that routes through one, and you never see that choice on the confirmation screen.

**A slow transaction re-submitted at a higher tip.** If your transaction sits unmined, most wallets offer to speed it up by re-sending with a bigger tip. That is a second transaction against the same nonce. If both land, you paid twice for one outcome. If only the faster one lands, you paid a premium for impatience — and if the swap was a market order, ten minutes of waiting is also ten minutes of price movement, which usually costs more than the tip you were trying to save.

## What each network charges in 2026

Two dated sources sit behind the table. The transfer ranges come from FeeEdge’s comparison of typical transfer fees, last reviewed 17 August 2026. The layer 2 display figures come from Ethereum.org’s directory snapshot covering 1–6 October 2026. These are averages, not live quotes. Crypto gas fees on any network in this table will beat them on a launch day and undershoot them on a quiet Sunday.

| Network | Typical transfer | Typical ERC-20 or token transfer | Native gas token |
|—|—|—|—|
| Ethereum L1 | Cheaper than a token move | $2–10, above $50 during mints | ETH |
| Base | Under $0.01 to ~$0.10 | $0.001–0.002 displayed average | ETH |
| Arbitrum One | $0.01–0.50 | $0.004–0.005 displayed average | ETH |
| Solana | Under $0.01 | Under $0.01 | SOL |
| Polygon PoS | $0.002–0.01 | $0.002–0.01 | POL |
| BNB Chain | $0.01–0.20 | $0.01–0.20 | BNB |
| Tron | $1–3 | $1–3 | TRX |

The first column is the FeeEdge range for a plain value transfer. The second column applies the same review to token moves, except on Base and Arbitrum One, where the Ethereum.org directory publishes a single displayed average rather than separate figures for transfers and token calls. Ethereum L1 has no published plain-transfer figure in that review, so the cell stays qualitative: 21,000 units at the same gwei price is a fraction of what an ERC-20 call costs.

Read the spread and the shape of the problem appears. Tron charges $1–3 to move a token. Base and Solana charge a cent or less. Ethereum L1 charges $2–10 and multiplies that during a mint. That is a gap of roughly 300 times between the two ends of those ranges for moving the same dollar to the same person, decided entirely by which network you picked at the withdrawal screen.

## Six ways to pay less

### How to lower gas fees, ranked by impact

**1. Route the transaction to a layer 2 or a cheap L1.** This is the only change that moves the number by orders of magnitude. Base at $0.001–0.002 against Ethereum L1 at $2–10 is not a saving you optimize into; it is a different category of cost. The [Ethereum layer 2 comparison](/ethereum-layer-2-comparison/) covers which L2 to pick, and the [best blockchains for cheap transfers](/best-blockchains-for-cheap-transfers/) covers the non-Ethereum options.

**2. Do not use ERC-20 to move stablecoins.** The token is a dollar on every chain. The delivery cost is not. An ERC-20 USDT move costs $2–10 on the network plus the exchange’s own withdrawal charge, which is highest on ERC-20 by a wide margin. The same dollars on Solana cost under $0.01 to move and roughly 0.5–1 USDT in withdrawal fee. Doing this one swap of habit accounts for most retail overpayment.

**3. Batch your actions.** Approve once and swap repeatedly rather than approving on every trade. Consolidate small balances before you move them: five dust positions cost five fees to relocate and one fee if you swap them into a single asset first. Every separate transaction is a separate 21,000-unit floor plus its own overhead.

**4. Keep the native token for gas.** You need ETH to transact on Base and Arbitrum One, SOL on Solana, BNB on BNB Chain, TRX on Tron and POL on Polygon PoS. A wallet holding only USDC cannot pay a fee, and the swap you make in a panic to acquire gas is always a bad trade at a bad price. Starknet is the exception worth knowing: it charges gas in STRK, not ETH. Set up the balance once with a [crypto wallet](/best-crypto-wallets/) that shows the gas token clearly before you need it.

**5. Check the exchange withdrawal fee separately from the network fee.** They are different charges collected by different parties, and the exchange one is often larger. Roughly 0.3 USDT on BEP-20 and 0.5–1 USDT on Solana SPL, with ERC-20 the most expensive route. Compare the total before you pick a venue, which is what the [best crypto exchanges](/best-crypto-exchanges/) comparison does, and read the [no-KYC exchange](/best-no-kyc-crypto-exchanges/) options if identity checks are the constraint rather than cost.

**6. Wait out congestion rather than overpaying a tip.** The base fee falls when blocks empty, and most retail transactions have no deadline. A tip that doubles your fee buys inclusion in the next block, which for a transfer you are making once a week is worth exactly nothing. If you must move during a spike, move on a layer 2 instead of bidding higher on layer 1.

## The mistake that costs more than gas

Everything above is about crypto gas fees you can see on the confirmation screen. This one is about a fee you cannot recover.

Sending on a network the destination does not support is the most expensive error in self-custody, and it is not priced like a fee at all. A $6 network fee to move $20 is already a 30% loss. If the exchange only credits deposits on Ethereum L1 and you sent on BNB Chain, the transaction still confirms, the funds still leave your wallet, and nothing arrives in your account. The same failure happens in reverse when the token symbol matches but the network does not: USDT on ERC-20 and USDT on TRC-20 are different assets that happen to share a ticker.

A fee you can see is not the expensive part

A visible $6 fee is cheap next to a $20 transfer that confirms on a network nobody will credit. Check the destination’s supported networks before you send, and send a small test amount the first time you use a new route.

The fix costs nothing. Read the deposit page, not the withdrawal page, because the deposit page is the only place that states which networks are actually accepted. Send a test amount the first time. And treat “same ticker, different network” as a distinct asset, because that is exactly how the ledger treats it.

## Verdict: the 1% rule for crypto gas fees

Use one threshold. Add the network fee to the exchange withdrawal fee, divide by the amount you are moving, and if the answer is above 1%, the route is wrong.

At 1%, a $20 transfer gets a $0.20 budget. Almost nothing on Ethereum L1 qualifies, while Base, Solana, Polygon PoS and BNB Chain clear it comfortably. A $500 transfer gets $5, which opens up Arbitrum One and the cheaper moments on L1. A $5,000 transfer gets $50, and at that size the $2–10 range stops mattering — one wrong swap costs more than the fee.

Paying $10 is correct in three situations. The amount is large enough that 1% covers it. The destination only accepts Ethereum L1, which happens more often than it should with older exchanges and institutional custody. Or the transaction is time-critical: a liquidation to top up, a claim window about to close, a price you have already agreed to. In those cases the fee is not the expensive part of waiting.

For everyone else the answer is unglamorous. Move the trade to a chain that charges a cent, keep the gas token in the wallet, stop treating ERC-20 as the default for stablecoins, and read the withdrawal fee before the network fee. That is how a $12 swap becomes a $0.02 swap without waiting for Ethereum to get cheaper.
